Our Story
Welcome to VELA NEGRA!
My name is Aisha Cort Hamilton and it’s amazing to see how what began as a stress reducing outlet has evolved into a personal expression of heritage and home that I’m so glad to share with you.
Why black?
We pour our candles with black wax because black absorbs and dispels negative energies and provides new beginnings and clarity as when the light of the vela appears, the darkness is illuminated. VELA NEGRA is a powerful source of protection, comfort and strength.
What inspires our fragrances?
The unique fragrances of VELA NEGRA are inspired by various elements of my Afro-Cuban and Guyanese heritage. The fragrances and their namesakes remind me of my heritage and places like, Cuba and Puerto Rico, that I have been lucky enough to call home. Our small batch collections will fill your home with the unforgettable fragrances of VELA NEGRA.
Each candle is individually hand-poured using 100% vegan coconut soy wax and ethically sourced wooden wicks, fragrance and dye to provide you with a luxurious and environmentally conscious, clean burn with the highest quality ingredients.

SUSTAINABILITY.
We use clean burning, nontoxic materials including: vegan coconut soy wax, phthalate-free perfume grade fragrance oils, and ethically sourced wooden wicks. We encourage our vessels to be reused for a new purpose or recycled.
